PR & Public Outreach

There is hardly any area of life where materials do not decide about physical comfort, quality or success of a product. Most of the innovations are merged in the products and thereby lose their visibility. Creating public awareness and understanding for new high-performance materials for numerous applications is an important task for EAM’s PR & Public Outreach activities. We aim to communicate scientific progress and results to numerous target groups and to a broader public: pupils, students, teachers, scientifically interested but non-specialist citizens, journalists, politicians, representatives from business and academia as well as further multipliers.

Dissemination of information

Current information on developments at EAM and its research topics are published via website, newsletters and press releases. We work in close collaboration with the FAU Press Office. EAM information of public interest is published via FAU social media channels.

One goal for EAM is to identify up-to-date topics concerning new materials, nanotechnology and -analytics, nanoelectronics, catalysis, optics and lightweight materials and, tailored to the specific target groups, make them accessible in the media. Furthermore, EAM publishes reviews  in journals that appeal to the public, such as Jahresmagazin Werkstofftechnologien, Laborpraxis, chemie&more, Nanotechnologie aktuell and regularly in FAU print media.

Videos for Science Communication

In addition to a DFG image film produced 2009, EAM started to develop film presentations of science for diverse target groups in 2015 – an overview of particle technology for the Interdisciplinary Center for Functional Particle Systems (FPS) and a learning videos for the EAM pupils lab physics so far. In both videos fundamental research is explained in an illustrative and demonstrative way by using a mix of cartoon style animated graphics, interviews with scientists and the visualization of their laboratory work.  Another video for the Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM) is planned for end of 2017.

Public Events and Exhibitions

EAM designs and organizes public events, exhibitions and lectures for different research topics

  • Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft (Long Night of Science) Children's and Evening program (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015)
  • VDI Technikmeile in the pedestrian zone in Nuremberg (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016)
  • Poster exhibition "Small Structures – Big Effects" at the Botanical Garden Erlangen and contribution at the Botanical Garden’s open day (2016)
  • Contribution to Open House Day with regards to the celebration of the 50th-year anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering 2016
  • BMFB Jahr der Wissenschaft 2010 (Year of Science) and "Science Express – Expedition Future." Participation with an exhibit on Flexible Electronics. Summary of the activities
  • EAM / RTG 1161 Exhibit "Process Chain in Printable Electronics” for the special exhibition: "Nano! Nutzen und Visionen einer neuen Technologie" shown at Technoseum Mannheim 2010 and at DASA in Dortmund 2011

Offers for Pupils and Teachers

Schoolchildren are the scientists, developers and consumers of tomorrow. Therefore, we consider it as an important task, to inspire them for science and technology.

  • EAM Lab Days for Pupils comprise of the latest research from the two major EAM topics of energy and nanotechnology and offer schoolchildren exiting and level-suitable experiments. The two pupils labs were developed for both chemistry and physics to enable a better fit for the school teachers for those subjects.
  • Teacher training for nanotechnology, chemistry and physics
  • Support of the nanotechnology school competition of IJF and Cluster Nanotechnologie
  • EAM eLearning platform at Chemgapedia demo version
